J. Walter Thompson Hong Kong: Studio; Skilled People, Advanced Equipment and Tools

We are one of the most advanced advertising production studios in Hong Kong -- fully computerised on Apple Macintosh computers, staffed with 26 full-time computer artists, and technically/administratively headed by Derek Tom and operationally headed by Anthony Ho. All jobs are done at least partially on computers while many are done entirely on computers, including photo retouching and four-colour film separations. While all high-resolution scanning is done out-of-house on high-end drum scanners, much photo retouching work is done in-house by experts, Joe Leung and Stephen Fung. Indeed, our people are at least as important as our advanced equipment and tools.

Currently, we have a total of 28 workstations -- 20 Power Macintoshes (2 of which are equipped with 96MB of RAM for photo retouching) and 8 Quadras. Primary graphics software include both Chinese and English versions of QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and PageMaker, and Macromedia FreeHand.

A Power Macintosh 8100/110-based AppleShare file server provides centralised file sharing and backup with 4GBs of online storage (using two 2GB stripped RAID volumes). Data storage, archival and distribution are provided by a Ricoh CD-Recorder, magneto-optical (MO) disk drives, Iomega ZIP and Bernoulli drives, SyQuest disk drives, and 4mm DAT drives. Other peripherals include several Hewlett Packard ScanJet II series scanners with transparency adapters, and Supra and USRobotics V.34 modems.

Printers include a Fiery 200i/Canon CLC-550 colour print server, a Tektronix Phaser IIIPXi colour printer, and the following black-and-white laser printers: 2 QMS 860 Print Systems, a DataProducts LZR-1580, a Compaq Pagemarq 15, a GCC SelectPress 600, an Apple LaserWriter Pro 630, and a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4M.
